The risk of death from hypoglycaemia in diabetes

چکیده
In 1989, a forensic biochemist giving evidence at an inquest in the UK claimed that he was aware of a number of deaths of young people with diabetes that were related to human insulin. The case generated considerable press interest and led the British Diabetic Association to commission a survey of all such deaths in the UK. The resulting publication identified a number of patients with a similar mode of sudden death and highlighted circumstantial evidence implicating nocturnal hypoglycaemia. The term ‘dead in bed syndrome’ was coined by Dr Ian Campbell in an accompanying editorial in Diabetic Medicine1.

Death within the first 24 hours of admission among newborn infants aged less than 24 hours in a Nigerian Special Care Baby Unit: Role of significant hypothermia and hypoglycaemia
Background: Neonatal deaths mostly occur within the first one week and first 24 hours of life from a variety of conditions. Objective: To examine the role of significant hypothermia and hypoglycaemia, in addition to some other factors, in neonatal mortality occurring within the first 24 hours of admission. Methods: A prospective study of newborn infants hospitalized within the first 24 hours of ...
متن کاملHypoglycaemia, chronic kidney disease and death in type 2 diabetes: the Hong Kong diabetes registry
BACKGROUND In patients with type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased risk of hypoglycaemia and death. Yet, it remains uncertain whether hypoglycaemia-associated mortality is modified by CKD. METHODS Type 2 diabetic patients, with or without CKD at enrolment were observed between 1995 and 2007, and followed up till 2009 at hospital medical clinics. We used add...
متن کاملCardiac implications of hypoglycaemia in patients with diabetes – a systematic review
BACKGROUND Hypoglycaemia has been associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk and mortality in a number of recent multicentre trials, but the mechanistic links driving this association remain ill defined. This review aims to summarize the available data on how hypoglycaemia may affect CV risk in patients with diabetes. METHODS This was a systematic review of available mechanistic and c...

Abstract Background: Hypoglycaemia is a well recognized complication of falciparum malaria in children but its diagnosis may be overlooked because all the clinical features may be mimicked by severe malaria. To determine the prevalence of hypoglycaemia at the point of hospital admission of under-fives with falciparum malaria and identify its risk factors in patients seen in a Nigerian...
